Beast of Reincarnation is live today. Game Freak — yes, the Pokemon studio — has officially entered the action RPG arena with a dark, post-apocalyptic adventure starring a girl named Emma and her blighted dog Koo. The game unlocks globally at 00:00 UTC on August 4, which means players in the Americas can start playing on the evening of August 3.
If you're reading this on launch day, you probably want three things: the exact unlock time, a quick edition refresher, and a plan for your first hour. I've got you covered on all three.
Exact Release Times by Region
The game uses a single simultaneous worldwide unlock — no staggered rollout. Here's when it goes live:
| Region | Local Time | Date |
|---|---|---|
| US Pacific (PT) | 5:00 PM | August 3 |
| US Eastern (ET) | 8:00 PM | August 3 |
| Brazil (BRT) | 9:00 PM | August 3 |
| UK (BST) | 1:00 AM | August 4 |
| Central Europe (CEST) | 2:00 AM | August 4 |
| Japan (JST) | 9:00 AM | August 4 |
| Australia (AEST) | 10:00 AM | August 4 |
If the Play button doesn't appear immediately when the countdown hits zero, restart Steam. That's the most common hiccup on launch day.
Platforms, Editions, and Game Pass
Beast of Reincarnation is available on PC (Steam), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S simultaneously. It's also day one on Xbox Game Pass — Ultimate, PC, and Console tiers all get it. If you're a Game Pass subscriber, there's zero reason not to at least try it.
| Edition | Price | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $59.99 | Base game |
| Deluxe | $69.99 | Base game + digital artbook + soundtrack + Koo brown Shiba skin + 30,000 Amber (in-game currency) |
The Deluxe upgrade is a $10 bump. The Amber head start is the only genuinely useful part — the rest is cosmetic. If you're on Game Pass, you're already playing for "free," so save your money unless you fall in love.
Preloads have been live since August 2, so if you pre-ordered, your install should already be sitting on your drive. The game requires an SSD on PC (45 GB) — no HDD fallback.
Your First Hour: What to Do and in What Order
Once the game unlocks, resist the urge to button-mash through the opening. Here's the priority list that'll save you an hour of backtracking:
1. Pick Your Difficulty Honestly
Three modes are available from the start: Story (narrative-focused, forgiving combat), Standard (the intended experience), and Hard (tighter parry windows, aggressive AI, resource scarcity). You can switch mid-campaign, so there's no wrong choice — but if action RPGs aren't your usual genre, start on Story. The combat is timing-based and punishing if you treat it like a button-masher.
2. Learn the Parry System Before Anything Else
This is the single most important thing to internalize. Beast of Reincarnation uses a Sekiro-like deflection system — perfect parries give you zero chip damage, massive stagger buildup, and a Blight Energy refund. Regular blocks eat 30% chip damage and drain stamina fast.
The parry window sits at roughly 8 frames at 60 FPS. It's tight but learnable. Pro tip from the community: initiate a slight movement before raising your guard — something about the animation blending makes the timing feel more consistent.
3. Start Commanding Koo Immediately
Koo isn't a pet that auto-attacks while you do the real work. He's a co-protagonist with four commands on cooldowns:
- Distracting Bark — draws aggro for 5 seconds (15s cooldown)
- Hamstring Bite — 40% enemy slow (20s cooldown)
- Sealer's Howl — 15% damage buff for Emma (45s cooldown)
- Flora Sniff — highlights hidden healing plants (60s cooldown)
The combat loop is built around alternating between Emma's parries and Koo's commands. The command menu slows time without pausing — use it as a tactical breather. Players who ignore Koo are fighting at half strength.
4. Understand Camps and Checkpoints
Camps work like bonfires in Dark Souls: resting restores health and respawns enemies. Always bank your resources (spirit stones, Amber) before resting. Sometimes pushing forward to the next camp is smarter than backtracking to a safe one.
One thing that sets Beast of Reincarnation apart from most soulslike games: there's no death penalty. You don't lose experience or currency on death. You just respawn at the last camp, which makes exploration feel far less stressful.
5. Explore the Blight Forests Early
Emma's plant-vine powers are your traversal toolkit — double-jumping, grappling to zip-lines, and creating vine bridges. The blight forests that spawn around Nushi territories are the game's most hostile zones, but they're also where the best loot lives: spirit stones, rare crafting materials, and optional bosses that drop unique charms for Koo.
If a vine path looks possible, it almost always leads somewhere.
A Quick Word on Leaks
Pirated copies and spoilers have been circulating online since before launch. If you want to go in clean, be careful on social media — boss designs, story beats, and Koo's late-game abilities are all floating around. The review embargo lifts at the exact same moment as the unlock, so you'll be able to read full reviews right as the game goes live.
What's Next?
This is Game Freak's most ambitious non-Pokemon project to date, and early impressions from previews suggest the studio has the chops to pull off a graphically stunning action RPG. The "one-person, one-dog" concept is genuinely fresh — the hybrid real-time and command-based combat creates a rhythm that no other game quite replicates.

The game is 30-40 hours long with three difficulty modes and large connected regions rather than a single open world. Take your time. Seal everything you kill. And pet Koo — he's earned it.
