Elden Ring Best Builds Tier List — What Actually Works in 2026
My first Elden Ring build was a pure Strength colossal sword character with 60 Strength, 20 Vigor, and the Guts Greatsword. I thought I was clever. Then I got to Malenia and spent four hours learning that you can't trade hits with a boss that heals on every attack. I rage-respecced to a bleed build and killed her in three attempts.
That's the thing about Elden Ring — your build matters way more than your mechanical skill. A well-optimized build at level 150 can output triple the damage of a poorly-planned one, and the difference between struggling through a boss for hours versus first-trying it often comes down to which talismans you have equipped. Pairing the right build with the right summon companion can make an even bigger difference than your stat spread alone.
Shadow of the Erdtree completely reshuffled the meta. Some base-game S-tier builds got nerfed into the ground, some DLC weapons shot straight to the top, and the Scadutree Blessing system means you can't just out-level content anymore. Here's what actually works in Patch 1.12.

S+ Tier: These Builds Are Actually Broken
#1 Dual Scavenger Bleed
I watched a friend kill Mohg, Lord of Blood, in 12 seconds with this build. Mohg didn't even finish his "Tres! Duo! Unus!" countdown. He just died mid-sentence. That's the power level we're talking about.
Dual Curved Sword jumping L1 hits 4 times per input. Every hit builds bleed. With full buffs running, a single jump attack can proc hemorrhage for 10,000+ damage. Nothing in the game survives more than 30 seconds against this.
Build Profile:
Starting Class: Samurai
Level Target: 150
Stats:
Vigor: 50
Mind: 15
Endurance: 25
Strength: 12
Dexterity: 45
Intelligence: 9
Faith: 15 # Golden Vow + Flame Grant Me Strength
Arcane: 45 # Bleed buildup core stat
Gear:
Main Hand: Scavenger's Curved Sword +25 (Occult infusion)
Off Hand: Scavenger's Curved Sword +25 (Occult infusion)
Seal: Dragon Communion Seal
Head: White Mask (+10% damage after bleed proc)
Talismans:
- Lord of Blood's Exultation (+20% after bleed)
- Claw Talisman (jump attack +15%)
- Millicent's Prosthesis (+5 DEX + consecutive attack boost)
- Rotten Winged Sword Insignia (stacking attack boost)
Physick:
- Thorny Cracked Tear (consecutive attack boost)
- Greenburst Crystal Tear (stamina recovery)
Buff Sequence: Golden Vow → Flame Grant Me Strength → Physick → jump L1 everything
DPS: ~3,500-5,000 per jump L1 fully buffed
The problem: some DLC bosses (Putrescent Knight, certain gargoyles) are immune to bleed. When this happens your damage drops by 70% and you feel like you forgot to equip a weapon. Keep a backup Occult-infused weapon or grab a Bloodfiend's Arm (DLC weapon) for bleed-immune encounters. Don't be the person who respecced their entire build for one boss — just have a plan B.
#2 Blasphemous Blade Faith
This is my "I just want to beat the game without thinking" build. Taker's Flame deals massive fire AoE damage and heals you for 10% HP on kill plus 4% on hit. You can clear entire legacy dungeons without touching a flask. In Haligtree and Farum Azula — arguably the most obnoxious areas in the base game — it turns nightmare corridors into target practice.
Build Profile:
Starting Class: Confessor or Vagabond
Level Target: 150
Stats:
Vigor: 50
Mind: 25 # Taker's Flame costs 30 FP
Endurance: 20
Strength: 22
Dexterity: 15
Intelligence: 9
Faith: 60 # Fire damage core
Arcane: 10
Gear:
Main Hand: Blasphemous Blade +10
Off Hand: Sword of Milos +10 (FP regen on kill)
Seal: Erdtree Seal +10
Talismans:
- Fire Scorpion Charm (+12% fire damage)
- Shard of Alexander (+15% skill damage)
- Ritual Sword Talisman (+10% at full HP)
- Carian Filigreed Crest (-25% skill FP cost)
Physick:
- Flame-Shrouding Cracked Tear (+20% fire damage)
- Opaline Hardtear (+15% negation, 3 min)
Buff Sequence: Golden Vow → Flame Grant Me Strength → Physick → L2 spam
DPS: ~2,500-3,500 per Taker's Flame
Patch 1.12 nerfed Taker's Flame damage by about 15%, and honestly? Barely noticeable. You press L2 one extra time. The lifesteal wasn't touched. For a first playthrough or a "I just want to explore and enjoy the game" run, this is still the best build in Elden Ring. Pair it with Sword of Milos in the off-hand for infinite FP — every kill restores both HP and FP. You become a self-sustaining war crime.
S Tier: Excellent, Not Broken
#3 Moonveil Battlemage
Moonveil is Elden Ring's Swiss Army knife. Poke with sorceries at long range, delete things with Transient Moonlight at mid-range, frost AoE at close range. It covers every combat distance and never feels weak.
I used this for my first full completion run. Night Comet from across the room, Transient Moonlight when they got close, Adula's Moonblade for crowds. The only thing I'd change in hindsight: don't sleep on Rock Sling. Physical damage sorcery that staggers — it solves the "magic-resistant boss" problem that pure INT builds struggle with.
Build Profile:
Level Target: 150
Stats:
Vigor: 45
Mind: 30
Endurance: 20
Strength: 12
Dexterity: 30
Intelligence: 60
Faith: 6
Arcane: 9
Gear:
Main Hand: Moonveil +10
Staff: Carian Regal Scepter +10
Early Staff: Meteorite Staff (great until mid-game)
Core Spells:
- Night Comet (dual-wield Staff of Loss for stacking boosts)
- Rock Sling (physical damage + stagger)
- Ranni's Dark Moon (magic resist debuff)
- Adula's Moonblade (close-range AoE + frost)
Talismans:
- Magic Scorpion Charm (+12% magic)
- Shard of Alexander (+15% skill)
- Graven-Mass Talisman (+8% sorcery)
- Radagon Icon (faster casting)
Physick:
- Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear (+20% magic)
- Cerulean Hidden Tear (15s infinite FP)
The DLC made magic builds harder — several bosses have high magic resistance. But Moonveil's split damage (magic + physical) still gets through. Plus the bleed buildup from the katana hits give you another damage source. Pure sorcery builds suffered more from the DLC than Moonveil hybrids did.
#4 Star Fist Charged Heavy
This build is stupid. In the best way. You punch things. They fall over. You punch them while they're down. It's the highest physical DPS in Elden Ring and it turns Malenia into a punching bag — roughly 4-5 charged R2s stance-break her, and you get a free critical hit every time.
The catch: you have to be at point-blank range. No safety net. No range option. You're in the boss's face trading hits, and if your timing is off by half a second you eat a full combo. Against DLC bosses with tiny punish windows, this build separates the players who know every boss's moveset from the players who have been carried by range.
Build Profile:
Level Target: 150
Stats:
Vigor: 60 # You need every point — you're in melee range
Mind: 12
Endurance: 35
Strength: 54 # Soft cap when two-handing
Dexterity: 13
Intelligence: 9
Faith: 15 # Buffs
Arcane: 10
Gear:
Main Hand: Star Fist +25 (Heavy infusion)
Ash of War: Cragblade (+15% physical + poise damage)
Armor: Bull-Goat or at least 101+ Poise
Talismans:
- Axe Talisman (charged heavy +10%)
- Ritual Sword Talisman (+10% at full HP)
- Blue Dancer Charm (more damage at lower equip load)
- Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman (-20% physical)
Physick:
- Spiked Cracked Tear (charged attack +15%)
- Stonebarb Cracked Tear (easier stance breaks)
I tried this build for about two hours and went back to Blasphemous Blade. I respect people who main this. I am not one of them.
#5 Dragon Communion Faith
This is the "I want to be a dragon" build. Greyoll's Roar debuffs everything in a massive radius. Rotten Breath applies Scarlet Rot and you just wait for things to die. Against mobs it's basically cheating — one breath covers half a room.
The problem: Dragon Breath spells have absurdly long casting animations. DLC bosses will interrupt you constantly. Against hyper-aggressive enemies you'll spend more time getting knocked out of your casting animation than actually casting. Still T0 for clearing areas and invasions. Just don't expect to stand still and breathe fire on Messmer.
Build Profile:
Level Target: 150
Stats:
Vigor: 40
Mind: 35 # Dragon breaths eat FP
Endurance: 20
Strength: 12
Dexterity: 15
Intelligence: 7
Faith: 30 # Minimum for Dragon spells
Arcane: 60 # Seal scaling + bleed
Gear:
Seal: Dragon Communion Seal +10 (dual-wield for double scaling)
Weapon: Reduvia or Occult Uchigatana
Head: Silver Tear Mask (+8 Arcane)
Core Breaths:
- Rotten Breath / Ekzykes's Decay (Scarlet Rot)
- Dragonice (Frostbite)
- Greyoll's Roar (AoE debuff)
Talismans:
- Flock's Canvas Talisman (+8% incantations)
- Faithful's Canvas Talisman (+4% incantations)
- Fire Scorpion Charm
- Godfrey Icon (charged spells +15%)
A+ Tier: Great With Caveats
#6 Sword of Night & Flame
The coolest weapon in the game. Fire sweep for crowds, magic laser for single targets. Works against everything because it has two damage types.
The problem: requires 24 INT and 24 FTH at minimum. At level 150 you're spreading stats so thin that your Vigor and Mind suffer. This weapon really wants level 200+ to shine. For NG+ characters it's fantastic. For a first playthrough you'll feel stat-starved until the Mountaintops.
#7 Lightning Keen Guardian Swordspear
S-tier in PvP. Fastest R1 chain in the Halberd class, excellent running attack tracking, lightning infusion gets bonus damage in rain. Landing the first hit usually means winning the duel.
In PvE it's A-tier — safe range, solid damage, not quite matching the numbers of Bleed or Blasphemous builds. If you play both PvP and PvE this is your pick.
A Tier: Fun, Situationally Strong
#8 Greatsword Jump Attack
The "Guts from Berserk" build. Colossal Greatsword, Lion's Claw Ash of War, jump R2 everything. Staggers non-boss enemies in 1-2 hits. Extremely satisfying sound design — the CLANG when you pancake someone never gets old.
It does get old after 80 hours of the same jump attack animation. And DLC bosses have attack strings so fast that Colossal recovery frames get you killed. Patch 1.12 buffed Colossal attack speed by 8-12%, which helps, but this is still a build that punishes impatience.
#9 Frost + Fire Reset
Clever mechanic: Frostbite procs for 11% max HP damage + 20% defense debuff, then fire damage resets the frost status so you can proc it again immediately. Cold Uchigatana + Flame Art Wakizashi dual-wield. Theoretically infinite frost procs.
In practice: bosses immune to frost or fire (Fire Giant, Rykard, certain DLC enemies) ruin your entire strategy. And the weapon swapping mid-combat is fiddly enough that I kept messing it up under pressure. Cool concept, high skill floor.
#10 Backhand Blade (DLC)
Shadow of the Erdtree exclusive. Dual-wield L1 attacks with built-in micro-dashes, the Blind Spot skill lets you phase through attacks and backstab. It's the most stylish weapon added in the DLC and a genuine blast to play.
Damage is just A-tier — you're not matching Bleed or Blasphemous numbers. But if you're on NG+ and want a completely different combat feel, this is the one. Sometimes fun is more important than optimal.

FAQ
Which build for a first playthrough?
Blasphemous Blade Faith. Taker's Flame's healing means fewer flask trips, which means fewer deaths, which means less frustration. It's the build I wish I'd used on my first run instead of suffering through pure Strength.
Is level 150 enough for NG+7?
Yes, but adapt per boss. NG+7 Malenia has roughly 60,000 HP — you need percentage-based damage (bleed, frost, black flame) or you'll be there all day.
Which build for the DLC?
Dual Scavenger Bleed or Blasphemous Faith. DLC enemies are aggressive with small punish windows — either burst them down fast (bleed) or sustain through long fights (Blasphemous). Before you jump in, make sure you've done everything on our Shadow of the Erdtree preparation checklist — the Scadutree Blessing system is mandatory, not optional.
PvP vs PvE?
Different games entirely. Lightning Halberd and Moonveil dominate PvP. Blasphemous Blade is trivial to dodge in duels. Don't bring your PvE build to the Colosseum and wonder why you're losing.
