Apex Legends Season 30 — "Marked" — dropped on August 4, and Respawn did something unusual: they shipped zero new Legends and instead reworked one of the game's oldest. The patch notes are genuinely dense, so I've spent the first three days grinding ranked, testing every S-tier candidate, and getting absolutely deleted by Bloodhound squads that appeared out of thin air.
The short version: Bloodhound went from D-tier irrelevance to S-tier overnight. Loba and Rampart finally got the buffs they've needed for years. Energy weapons play completely differently now. And the loot economy — with gold attachments flat-out removed — is forcing squads to actually fight for resources instead of looting their way to a fully-kitted loadout in five minutes.
Here's the full meta breakdown, with tier placements I've verified across ranked Platinum through Master lobbies.
S Tier: The Legends Running Every Lobby
| Legend | Class | Why S Tier | Pick Rate Trend | |--------|-------|-------------|-----------------| | Bloodhound | Recon | Allfather's Cloak cloaks the entire squad — ambushes, escapes, and revives become unpredictable. Passive trail tracking gives free rotation info. | 🔼 Exploding | | Loba | Support | With purple loot rarer and gold bins removed, Black Market at 120s cooldown is the most consistent gear source in the game. Faster bracelet = actual escape tool. | 🔼 Surging | | Alter | Skirmisher | Untouched by nerfs while competitors got hit. Void Nexus remains the best team rotate ability. | ➡️ Stable | | Conduit | Support | Shield regen untouched. When everyone else is fighting over scarce loot, Conduit's sustain wins third-party fights. | ➡️ Stable | | Bangalore | Assault | Smoke + Digital Threat synergy works even better now that gold optics are gone. Rolling Thunder zones teams into unfavorable positions. | ➡️ Stable | | Axle | Skirmisher | Nitro Gates nerfed (5s→3s slide) but team rotation is still the strongest utility in Apex. One tier drop — she was that far ahead. | 🔽 Slight drop |
Let me be blunt about Bloodhound: if you're not running them or playing with someone who is, you're at a disadvantage. The new Ultimate — Allfather's Cloak — deploys a device that cloaks every squadmate within range, grants threat vision and movement speed, and keeps the effect active for 12 seconds after leaving the zone. Damage or firing weapons breaks the cloak, but Bloodhound can use their own abilities without ending it. I've watched entire teams rotate through open fields and appear on top of squads with zero warning.
The passive rework is almost as impactful. Enemies now leave a glowing red trail near fresh clues, similar to the old Beast of the Hunt footsteps but active all the time. White Ravens fly farther and can be activated just by looking at them. The Tactical now delivers three seconds of full-body scan followed by four snapshot scans — less "wallhack spam" than old Bloodhound, but way more useful for actually landing shots during a fight.
Loba's rise deserves its own mention. Respawn removed gold backpacks, gold bins, mythic bins, and the Hot Zone from the loot pool entirely. Purple attachment spawns are down. Arsenals don't activate until Evo Harvesters come online. The result: good loot is genuinely scarce, and Loba's Black Market — now on a 120-second cooldown instead of 150 — is borderline unfair. Her bracelet moves 30% faster and covers 15% more distance, which means she can actually escape fights instead of teleporting two feet and dying during the animation. I ran her for 15 ranked games and averaged significantly better loadouts by Round 2 than any other Legend I tested.
A Tier: Strong Picks That Need the Right Squad
| Legend | Class | What Keeps Them in A Tier | Pick Rate Trend | |--------|-------|---------------------------|-----------------| | Rampart | Defensive | Faster Amped Walls and mobile Sheila finally give her mid-fight utility. Setup time still hurts in aggressive ranked lobbies. | 🔼 Rising | | Pathfinder | Skirmisher | Zip line rotates untouched. Mobility is always meta — just not as dominant without gold loot to grab. | ➡️ Stable | | Octane | Skirmisher | Stim speed still wins 1v1s. Jump pad rotates are worse than Void Nexus but better than walking. | ➡️ Stable | | Valkyrie | Skirmisher | Tactical damage nerf and Ultimate height reduction hurt, but Skyward Dive is still the only team-wide vertical rotate. | 🔽 Dropping | | Seer | Recon | Turn slow reduction makes his tactical less oppressive, but heartbeat sensor still gives free info no other Legend has. | 🔽 Slight drop | | Mad Maggie | Assault | Wrecking Ball disrupts defensive setups. Drill punishes the teams that over-commit to buildings. | ➡️ Stable | | Lifeline | Support | DOC revive remains one of the best reset tools. Fewer gold items means her care package matters more. | 🔼 Slight rise | | Fuse | Assault | Knuckle Cluster pressure against teams huddled behind Rampart walls. Motherlode zones the final ring. | ➡️ Stable | | Crypto | Recon | Drone EMP deletes Rampart walls and traps. Niche but devastating against the defensive teams gaining popularity. | 🔼 Slight rise | | Sparrow | Skirmisher | Solid mobility with a lower skill floor than Pathfinder. Good solo queue option. | ➡️ Stable |
Rampart deserves a callout: she's the biggest beneficiary of this patch that nobody's talking about. Faster Amped Wall deployment means she can actually set up during a fight instead of getting beamed during the animation. Moving while firing Sheila turns her from a stationary turret into a walking area denial tool. And with Crypto seeing more play specifically to counter defensive setups, Rampart's kit creates an interesting rock-paper-scissors dynamic in high-rank lobbies.
Valkyrie's drop from S to A is real but not catastrophic. The tactical missiles deal less damage and have a trajectory that makes them harder to fire over high cover, and her Ultimate's height was reduced 15%. She's still the only Legend who can give her entire team a vertical rotation — that utility doesn't disappear just because the numbers got tweaked. But squads that crutched on Valk for every rotate now need a backup plan.
B Tier: Viable but Situational
| Legend | Why B Tier | |--------|-----------| | Gibraltar | Dome shield and gun shield work, but aggressive Bloodhound meta punishes static defense | | Revenant | Death Totem pushes are countered by Bloodhound's cloak escape. Aggressive but outclassed | | Horizon | Gravity Lift is still solid, but the meta favors information over verticality right now | | Newcastle | Castle Wall is fantastic for resets, but slow deployment hurts against cloaked Bloodhound pushes | | Vantage/Wraith/Ash | All three have mobility/rotational tools that are simply worse versions of what S/A-tier options offer | | Wattson/Caustic | Defensive setups get dismantled by the sheer aggression Bloodhound squads bring. Pylons and gas traps can't stop what you can't see coming | | Ballistic | Weapon overdrive is fun but doesn't solve the information gap against Bloodhound |
I want to be clear: B-tier Legends can absolutely win ranked games. I've been killed by a terrifying Wattson player who held Fragment East against three separate squads. But you're working harder for the same results. If you're in Platinum and your goal is Diamond, pick an S or A-tier Legend and make your life easier. If you're a Gibraltar main with 5,000 hours, keep doing your thing — player skill still outweighs tier placement at every rank below Predator.
C Tier: The Opportunity Cost Is Too High
Mirage and Catalyst sit at the bottom. Mirage's bamboozles become less effective the higher you climb — Diamond+ players track the real Mirage through decoys with depressing consistency. Catalyst's ferrofluid walls can delay pushes, but Bloodhound's threat vision through cloak partially negates visual obstruction, and the current meta rewards information and aggression over zone control.
The Energy Weapon Overhaul: What Actually Matters
This is the most underrated change in Season 30. Energy ammo boxes are gone. The Havoc, Nemesis, Volt, Devotion, RE-45, and Triple Take now carry regenerating ammunition stockpiles measured in magazines. Regeneration pauses while firing or reloading, and most weapons recover roughly one magazine every 18 seconds.
What this means in practice: energy weapons are incredible for short engagements but become dangerously unreliable during extended third-party fights. The Volt feels amazing for one fight, then you're dry and the third party shows up while your ammo bar is still creeping toward usable. I've died to this exact scenario three times already.
The Flatline is the best floor-loot weapon in Season 30 because it completely sidesteps this problem. It avoided the close-range weapon nerfs (Alternator, R-99, RE-45 all lost damage), doesn't suffer from energy ammo downtime, and performs reliably at every range that matters in ranked.
Other weapon notes that matter:
- 30-30 Repeater moved to Care Package with 51 body damage and Shatter Caps
- G7 Scout returned to floor loot but lost Double Tap, damage, fire rate, and magazine capacity — it's a shadow of its former self
- Corrupted Attachments are the new gold-tier equivalent: powerful bonuses with real drawbacks. Overflowing Magazine (+size, -reload speed) on a Flatline is genuinely scary. Headseeker Barrel (+headshot damage, -hipfire accuracy) rewards the players who can actually aim.
The Team Comp That's Farming Ranked Right Now
After testing in Platinum and Diamond lobbies, the composition I'm seeing win the most fights:
Bloodhound + Loba + Bangalore
Bloodhound provides information control and the squad cloak for rotates and ambushes. Loba keeps the team geared without wasting time looting. Bangalore's smoke synergizes with Bloodhound's threat vision (you see them, they can't see you), and Rolling Thunder forces enemy squads into bad positions during final rings. I've run this exact comp with a premade squad for 20 games and won 6 of them — which is significantly above my usual rate.
Alternative if you don't have a Loba player: Bloodhound + Conduit + Bangalore. Conduit's shield sustain replaces Loba's gear advantage, and the team still maintains information dominance through Bloodhound.
Bloodhound's kit works with any team composition. The passive tracking and squad cloak don't require coordination to generate value — you can carry a silent random squad just by pinging trails and timing your Ultimate for rotates. Loba is a close second for the same reason; self-sufficient loot means you're never undergeared regardless of what your teammates are doing.
What About World's Edge?
The map rework is worth mentioning because World's Edge is the featured map for the first week of Season 30. Key changes:
- Sorting Factory returns with new tunnels, platforms, and zipline routes. The train station building now has functional train cars for cover.
- Fragment West regains its Construction Stacks, spreading combat away from the single building that used to be the entire POI.
- Big Maude merged into Landslide, making that location a viable drop instead of a ghost town.
- Tree Settlement and War Camp replace The Tree and Survey Camp respectively.
The Sorting Factory return has shifted drop patterns significantly — it's contesting Fragment for most-crowded POI designation, which is healthy for the map overall. Fragment still draws the kill-hungry players, but Sorting Factory gives competitive squads a real alternative landing zone with good loot and rotation options.
The removal of gold attachments, gold backpacks, gold bins, mythic bins, and the Hot Zone means you can't luck into a full loadout anymore. Purple attachments are rarer. Arsenals activate later. MRVNs are less common and single-use. The result: fights over loot are more frequent and more meaningful. Drop with a plan, not with hope.
Verdict: The Best Season 30 Has to Offer
Season 30 doesn't have a flashy new Legend or a map-destroying event. What it has is the most significant systemic overhaul Apex has seen in years — and for my money, it's one of the best patches Respawn has ever shipped. The Bloodhound rework alone justifies the season pass. The loot economy changes make every match feel more deliberate. Energy weapons actually have an identity now instead of being "the ammo type nobody picks up."
If you haven't played Apex in a few seasons, now is genuinely a good time to come back. Pick Bloodhound, grab a Flatline, and understand that the squad that appears out of thin air ten meters to your left is probably about to ruin your afternoon. You'll get used to it.
