Nine days after launch, GRAIN ROT has a search query that keeps showing up in our analytics with zero clicks: "find biggies friend in the deep layers." That's a tell. Players are typing it into Google, hitting our beginner's guide as a search result, and walking away empty. Either nobody has cracked the quest, or everyone is searching for the wrong thing.
Here's what I know after running the elevator for a few nights and reading through the Discord threads.
First — who is "Biggie's friend"?
When you collapse at the door of Biggie's Empire in the opening cinematic, you are rescued by two brothers, not one: Biggie and his brother Murch. Most of the people typing this query assume Biggie is alone in the Outpost and that there is some lost friend hiding in the Deep Layers. That is not quite right.
In the current launch build, Biggie runs morale and layout — he tells you to clean floors, patch walls, and dream bigger. Murch runs the workshop: the demolition mallet, the artifact coins, the gacha machine, the blueprint opener, and the advanced tools. The two brothers are inseparable narratively. If you are looking for "Biggie's friend," the answer the game expects you to find is almost certainly Murch, who is standing right behind the reception desk from minute one.
This is the first misconception the query exposes. Players expect a fetch quest. The game gives you a tutorial NPC who never leaves.
Then who lives down in the Deep Layers?
The Deep Layers are the procedurally generated floors under the Outpost. The slot machine on the cursed elevator tells you, before each descent, what corrupted enemies you are likely to meet — and that the layout reshuffles every trip.
What's less obvious is that wandering Sparks can also spawn down there. The outpost wiki confirms that as your base improves, it becomes a beacon for Sparks who offer specialized quests and blueprints. Some of those NPCs only appear once your Outpost is upgraded enough — which is why early-game players searching "find biggie's friend in the deep layers" never find what they are looking for. They have not unlocked the Outpost tier that spawns the NPCs.
So the actual answer to the popular query is twofold:
- If you mean Murch — he never leaves the Outpost. You do not need to find him; he is the guy selling you the broom.
- If you mean a wandering Spark NPC — focus on upgrading the Outpost first (Vessel Bench, Storage Locker, then the rooms on the second floor), then descend into the Deep Layers with a full crew. NPCs will start appearing as glowing silhouettes in side rooms, and they usually offer one-time quests tied to a specific room layout.
A practical sequence that actually works
After about six hours of running the elevator, this is the order that consistently surfaced NPCs in the Deep Layers for me and two friends running co-op:
- Finish the Fixer Upper quest with Biggie above ground, then immediately talk to him again to start the introspect / craft two structures quest.
- Buy the second-tier Vessel Bench and Storage Locker from Murch before your third descent. This is when the slot machine starts showing more diverse layouts.
- Run the elevator with three or four Sparks, not solo. The Deep Layers are tuned around a full crew, and several wandering NPCs only spawn when the party is large enough.
- Clear Rot between runs at the Outpost Sun. Standing in direct sunlight removes the Rot debuff so you do not start the next descent already weakened.
- Listen for ambient dialogue. Wandering Sparks in the Deep Layers hum a different audio cue than the Corrupted. If your crew hears a clean voice in a side room, that is almost always a quest NPC and not an enemy.
For the full beginner's path — vessel choices, Outpost priorities, the Grinder economy — our GRAIN ROT beginner's guide covers the loop end to end. This article is specifically about the missing piece most players are searching for.
The honest answer
There is no hidden NPC called "Biggie's friend" waiting in the basement. The query is half a misconception and half a real progression wall. If you upgrade the Outpost far enough, you will start seeing the NPCs that players are actually looking for, and one of them will eventually point you at a story quest that explains why Biggie is so obsessed with the second floor.
Until Beck & Branch Games patches more named NPCs into the Deep Layers (the launch roadmap hinted at more Outpost NPCs in a post-launch update), the best strategy is to push the Outpost to its current cap, descend in a full crew, and listen for the voices that are not Corrupted.
GRAIN ROT is available on Steam ($8.99 during launch week, $9.99 after). For a deeper dive into the extraction loop and vessel switching, see our GRAIN ROT beginner's guide.
