Helldivers 2 patch 01.004.000 — "Into the Unjust" is live, and it is the biggest Terminid-focused drop since the game launched on Xbox last week. Arrowhead is sending us underground into Hive Worlds to stop the Gloom, but the rollout is running into the same performance turbulence that has dogged the live-service shooter for months.
This guide covers what is new, what is broken, and what you can do while Arrowhead preps the next round of fixes.
Hive Worlds: Bring a Flashlight
The headline addition is Hive Worlds, a set of planets overrun by Terminid hives. These are not reskins of existing bug worlds — they are randomly generated giant cave systems with their own rules.
- Randomized cave layouts make memorization impossible; expect different tunnels and rooms every drop.
- Acid lakes and advanced bug spires cover the surface, turning the overworld into an environmental hazard.
- Roof holes let you call stratagems down into the caves — but only where the cave ceiling is open.
- Destructible walls can be blown open to create new paths or escape routes.
- Limited visibility is a real mechanic. Arrowhead’s official advice: bring a flashlight.
The design forces close-quarters play. Weapons and stratagems that dominate open terrain are less reliable when enemies pour through narrow passages, so loadout flexibility matters more than raw range.
New Missions in the Gloom
Hive Worlds introduce objectives that go beyond “kill everything that moves.” The two standout mission types are:
- Destroy the Spore Lung — Delve deep into the caves and take out the organ pumping out the infectious Gloom fog.
- Escort the GATER oil rig — Take control of a mobile oil-drilling platform and siphon the mysterious oily substance from the Hive World surface while defending it from swarms.
Resource extraction and standard extermination missions also appear inside the caves, but the Spore Lung and GATER objectives are the ones driving the new meta.
Four New Terminid Variants
The Terminids did not take the invasion well. Into the Unjust adds four new enemy types built around burrowing, acid, and air superiority.
| Enemy | Behavior | Primary Threat | Best Counter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rupture Spewer | Burrows underground, erupts to spew corrosive acid, then retreats | Area denial and sustained acid damage | High fire-rate weapons; shoot as it surfaces, before it can vomit |
| Rupture Warrior | Gloom-mutated melee unit that prefers tunneling to open combat | Close-range ambushes from below | Shotguns, SMGs, and area-of-effect stratagems in tight cave corners |
| Rupture Charger | Armored burrower that tunnels at high speed and erupts to charge | Sudden long-range underground charge attacks | Autocannon, railgun, or anti-armor support weapons; keep moving |
| Dragonroach | Large flying Terminid that circles prey and strafes with combustible acid | Vertical pressure; ignores cover on the cave floor | Anti-air primary or a well-placed Eagle Airstrike / Railgun Strike |
In Hive Worlds the Dragonroach is the enemy most likely to wipe a squad. It attacks from angles the cave walls do not protect against, its acid limits movement, and it can loiter outside effective range. Assign one Helldiver to anti-air duty the moment wings are spotted.
Balance Changes and Bug Fixes
Patch 01.004.000 also touches stratagems and crowd control:
- Non-explosive Orbitals unified — Orbital Smoke and Orbital E.M.S now share projectile damage, armor penetration, and demolition values with Orbital Gas. Smoke gets a meaningful damage and AP bump in the process.
- Stun explosions standardized — Stun effects now apply on the explosion itself, not only inside the lingering status volume.
- No more stun ragdoll — Getting stunned no longer sends Helldivers flying. In tight caves, this is a quiet but huge quality-of-life win.
On the bug-fix side, Arrowhead addressed crashes tied to the MA5C Assault Rifle, hot-joining, backpack drops, missing weapon reverb, guidance-system targeting oddities, and Automaton dropship damage.
Performance Issues and Workarounds
The new content is landing alongside serious technical problems. Players across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox are reporting frequent crashes, severe frame-rate drops, texture glitches, and a dramatic install-size spike — the PC version is now exceeding 140 GB for some players, while the Xbox build sits closer to 36 GB.
Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani has been candid on the official Discord, stating that “performance is not good enough” and that “a fix for some of the most immediate things is being prepped.” He also acknowledged the file-size bloat is “being looked at right now” and admitted the studio is carrying “crippling technical debt.”
Until those patches land, the community has found a few workarounds that are helping:
- Launch with
-use-d3d11on PC to reduce stuttering and improve frame stability. - Clear your GPU shader cache after the patch to avoid hitching.
- Verify game-file integrity through Steam to catch corrupted downloads.
- Keep 150+ GB free on your install drive; the bloat seems to aggravate crashes when storage is tight.
- Cap your FPS to your monitor’s refresh rate to reduce CPU/GPU spikes.
These are band-aids, not cures, but they can keep the game playable while Arrowhead works on the underlying issues.
Dust Devils Premium Warbond Drops September 4
Two days after the update, Arrowhead is launching the Dust Devils Premium Warbond on September 4. It is themed around desert survival and Hive World extermination, and it brings a full gear set for the new biome:
- AR-2 Coyote — Assault rifle with incendiary rounds.
- S-11 Speargun — Heavy stratagem that fires harpoons releasing toxic gas.
- G-7 Pineapple — Cluster frag grenade.
- MS-11 Solo Silo — Hellpod-delivered missile with a handheld remote laser.
- EAT-700 Expendable Napalm — Napalm cluster launcher.
- DS-42 Federation’s Blade and DS-191 Scorpion armor — Both carry the Desert Stormer passive, granting resistance to fire, gas, acid, and arc damage while increasing throw distance.
- Rattlesnake vehicle patterns and new capes, banners, an emote, and the “Burier of Heads” title.
The Warbond costs the standard 1,000 Super Credits (roughly $9.99 USD) and requires base-game ownership and progression to unlock rewards.
If you missed the Illuminate invasion last week, our Devoid of Liberty guide covers the Void biome, the Wretch and Crusher enemies, SEAF support squads, and the level-cap bump to 300. Hive Worlds are tough, but the Void is its own nightmare.
The Bottom Line
Into the Unjust is conceptually one of Helldivers 2’s strongest updates: Hive Worlds force a completely different pace, the new Terminid variants add real variety, and the GATER and Spore Lung missions give long-time players something fresh to master. The Dust Devils Warbond also looks like a direct answer to the acid-and-fire environmental threats in the new caves.
The catch is execution. Performance and stability problems are severe enough that CEO Shams Jorjani has publicly apologized and promised fixes. If you can play through the crashes and frame drops, the content is worth the dive. If not, waiting for the next hotfix is the smarter call — and Arrowhead says it is coming soon.
