PC PS5

Team NINJA's first expansion for Nioh 3, Hell Rising, drops tomorrow — Tuesday, August 18 at 9:00 PM PT on PS5 and PC (Steam). Six months after the base game's February launch, this is the moment Nioh 3 gets meaningfully harder, and a lot more interesting.

I've been running through what's confirmed so far so you don't have to dig through a dozen press releases. Here's everything in Hell Rising — the new setting, the new weapon class, the new difficulty ceiling, and the prep checklist that actually matters before you log in.

What Hell Rising Is: Keian-Era Edo, 1651

Hell Rising picks up with protagonist Takechiyo hurled forward in time to Edo, 1651 — the opening years of the Keian era. The city should be Japan at its settled peak; instead, the death of the future shogun has plunged the castle town into chaos, and the Crucible's cursed gales are tearing through it once more.

The new open-field map is described as a hellish wasteland where yokai, human rebels, and foreign alchemists all roam. Two characters anchor the new story arc:

  • Yagyu Jubei — the legendary one-eyed swordsman, and a natural fit for Nioh 3's historical-fiction DNA.
  • Rodrigo — a Spanish envoy with his own stake in the Spirit Stone mysteries behind the crisis.

That historical-figure-meets-foreign-arrival pairing is classic Nioh — history colliding with the outside world — and Koei Tecmo is leaning into it hard here.

Series Context

The base game's story ran through 1622 Edo with Takechiyo and Kunimatsu. Hell Rising jumps roughly three decades forward — so if you've finished the main campaign, you're ready for the time skip. The DLC assumes you've completed the base game's story.

The Hoko & Shield: A Brand-New Weapon Class

The headline feature is a new weapon archetype: the Hoko & Shield, available in both the Samurai and Ninja styles. The design blends the short spear's reach and thrusting power with a shield's blocking capability — a defensive, guard-counter playstyle that Nioh 3's existing arsenal doesn't quite cover.

Two details stand out from the official breakdown:

  1. Basic attacks combine shield defense with spear offense — you can hold the line and poke from behind cover, which changes how you approach human enemies that previously punished defensive play.
  2. Tactical moves include flinging the shield at enemies — a ranged option that opens up openings for follow-ups, and honestly the most intriguing part for build theorycrafting.

For veterans, this is the first real question mark in the new meta: does Hoko & Shield slot into a tanky Samurai guard-counter build, or does Ninja-style mobility let you do hit-and-run shield tosses? We'll be testing both once it unlocks — expect our build breakdown shortly after launch.

Beyond the weapon, Hell Rising adds new Martial Arts, Ninjutsu, Guardian Spirits, and Soul Cores, giving every existing build fresh options on top of what carries over from the base game.

New Endgame: Enlightened One's Journey and the Picture Scroll

Team NINJA is pushing the ceiling in two directions at once.

Enlightened One's Journey is a new difficulty slot above the base game's top tier, aimed at a third playthrough. Enemies can randomly receive a Curse buff that makes them significantly stronger — the kind of mode designed for players who have already burned through everything. The reward is real though: cursed enemies drop divine-rarity items, and the DLC adds divine-rarity Grace set bonuses for endgame build customization.

The Hundred Demon Realms Picture Scroll is a brand-new equipment category. Enemies sometimes drop a scroll as rare loot, but to equip it you must first clear the automatically generated battle bound to that scroll. Scrolls are replayable — each run lets you randomly re-roll one of the scroll's special effects while strengthening it. If you loved Nioh 2's scroll farming, this is that loop, formalized and expanded.

Pre-Launch Checklist: What to Do Before Tomorrow

Here's what I'd actually do in the hours before the unlock — nothing here requires farming for 10 hours, it's all about being in the right state to jump in:

  1. Finish the main campaign (if you haven't). The DLC assumes base-game completion. If you skipped side content, at least get the story done so you can access the new arc immediately.

  2. Check your save's difficulty progression. Enlightened One's Journey targets a third playthrough, so make sure you've started your second cycle. Per series tradition, new difficulties unlock after clearing the previous tier.

  3. Bank materials, not just Amrita. New weapons mean new upgrades. Hold onto smithing materials and soul cores instead of dumping them into your current weapon's final affixes.

  4. Pre-download on your platform. The DLC is a digital unlock — make sure the base game is updated and pre-load is done so you're not waiting on a download when it drops at 9:00 PM PT.

  5. Decide your Hoko & Shield build early. Samurai style leans into guard-counter and tanking; Ninja style leans into mobility and shield-toss setups. Picking one on day one saves you respec time.

Price and How to Get It

Hell Rising is included in the Nioh 3 Season Pass at $39.99, which also covers the second expansion, Bloody Insurrection (slated for release by February 2027). If you own the Digital Deluxe Edition ($109.99), you're already covered — no additional purchase needed.

Standalone pricing for the DLC hasn't been confirmed separately yet, so if you plan to play both expansions, the Season Pass is the clear value pick.
