Riot just dropped the Patch 26.16 preview, and if you've spent the last month getting poked out of lane by Brand and Swain while your support roams mid at level three, this one's for you. Lead Gameplay Designer Matt "Phroxzon" Leung-Harrison posted the full preview on August 4, and the message is clear: the pendulum is swinging back toward traditional ADCs.

I've been playing bot lane through this entire mage meta, and I'll say it plainly — this patch can't come soon enough. When I lock in Jinx and see Ziggs on the enemy team, I already know the first 10 minutes are going to be a survival horror game. The changes here aren't about deleting mages from bot lane, but they should make the lane playable again for marksman mains.

When Does Patch 26.16 Go Live?

Patch 26.16 hits live servers on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, following Riot's standard two-week patch cycle. The next update after this one is scheduled for August 26.

Alongside the balance work, three new Faerie Court skins drop with this patch: Gwen, Lulu, and Bel'Veth, each priced at 1350 RP.

The Big Story: Roaming Support Penalty Gets Crushed

This is the heaviest single change in the entire patch. The support item gold and XP penalty for leaving lane is getting slammed:

AspectBefore Patch 26.16After Patch 26.16
Penalty amount25%33%
DurationUntil level 3Until level 5

Two extra levels of coverage and a bigger resource cut — that's a serious deterrent. In practice, a support who cheat-recalls and roams before level 5 will come back to lane noticeably behind in experience. Roaming isn't dead, but it now has to pay off with a kill or an objective to be worth it. No more free map pressure.

I've been on both sides of this. When my support roams well, it feels great — but when the enemy Thresh shows up mid while I'm stuck 1v2 under tower, it's miserable. Phroxzon put it perfectly: "Roaming Support gameplay can be interesting when seeing it every few games, but the current state of it is a bridge too far." Hard agree.

ADC Magic Resistance: Survive Early, Scale Late

Every ADC on the roster is getting the same stat shuffle:

StatOld ValueNew ValueImpact
Base Magic Resist3033Better early survival against Brand, Swain, Ziggs
MR Growth per Level1.31.1Slightly more vulnerable to magic late game

This is a smart trade-off. ADCs get breathing room during laning phase — the exact window where mage poke is most oppressive — but stay squishy to magic damage later, when marksmen are supposed to be winning through raw DPS anyway. Tristana gets special treatment: her base MR goes from 28 to 31 instead (because Mid Tristana is a whole other problem Riot doesn't want to reawaken).

The full list of champions affected: Akshan, Aphelios, Ashe, Caitlyn, Draven, Ezreal, Graves, Jhin, Jinx, Kai'Sa, Kalista, Kindred, Kog'Maw, Lucian, Miss Fortune, Quinn, Samira, Senna, Smolder, Twitch, Varus, Vayne, Yunara, and Zeri. That's 24 marksmen getting the same buff.

ADC Systems Getting Buffed

Several underused marksman tools are being strengthened to give ADCs more agency in the 2v2:

SystemChangeWhy It Matters
Berserker's GreavesBuffedStronger first-boot purchase for attack-speed ADCs
Gunmetal Greaves (T3)BuffedMakes the upgrade path more competitive
Fleet FootworkBuffedBetter sustain against poke lanes
Runaan's HurricaneBuffedLong-neglected item for on-hit ADCs
Heal (summoner spell)BuffedStronger 2v2 skirmish potential

Exact numbers aren't finalized yet — Riot is still testing — but the direction is clear. Fleet Footwork alone could be a game-changer for champions like Jinx, Caitlyn, and Zeri who rely on surviving lane to scale.

Champion Buffs, Nerfs, and Adjustments

Buffed (Kennen, Gwen, Azir)

Three champions get love this patch. Kennen and Gwen are getting top lane buffs — I've barely seen Gwen in my games lately, and Kennen has been invisible outside of pro play. Azir also gets improvements, which always makes me nervous because Azir buffs have historically been a one-way ticket to pro play dominance. We'll see if Riot threads the needle this time.

Nerfed (Poppy, Camille, Bel'Veth)

Poppy and Camille are eating nerfs specifically to reduce their roaming support presence. Camille's changes are designed to shift her power back to top lane — base mana goes up, but her passive shield health ratio drops significantly and her Q max-health damage gets scaled back. She'll still be playable as a counter-pick in the right hands, but you won't see her roaming at level three and blowing up mid laners anymore.

Bel'Veth gets tuned down after her Patch 26.15 rework landed a bit too hot. Expected — she was terrorizing solo queue.

Adjusted (Nasus)

Nasus is getting a relative buff for top lane while staying power-neutral in jungle. Riot explicitly said Nasus jungle doesn't need nerfs — his high win rate is partly because he's easy to pilot, not because he's broken. Think Malphite sitting at 52% win rate: that's a champion being accessible, not overpowered. Good call.

Item and System Changes

Sundered SkyNerfedCost 3100→2700, heal ratios cut. Less sustain, more accessible

The Sunfire Aegis change is worth highlighting. Riot clarified that data-mined armor nerfs were incorrect — this is a pure buff to champion burn damage with a modest price increase, designed to create a clearer choice between Sunfire and Hollow Radiance. Tank players who've been defaulting to Hollow Radiance might want to reconsider.

Sundered Sky is getting rebalanced: cheaper (2700 gold, down from 3100) but with significantly reduced healing ratios. The heal now scales off bonus AD instead of base AD, and the missing-health ratio drops from 6% to 4%. It's still a bruiser item, just less of an auto-buy.

Why Riot Is Doing This Now

Phroxzon traced the mage bot meta back to Patch 26.11, when melee supports were buffed and enchanters were nerfed simultaneously. Players then figured out how to bypass the anti-roaming controls built into support quests, and the two shifts stacked into what we've been dealing with: supports roaming at level three, ADCs getting zoned off waves, and mages dominating the bot lane pick rate.

At MSI 2026, mage bot laners made up roughly 20% of picks — and that number only climbed through the Esports World Cup and KeSPA Cup. Even Gumayusi, T1's legendary ADC, voiced frustration about the state of the role. Riot heard it.

But here's what I appreciate: Riot isn't overcorrecting. Phroxzon explicitly said they like mage diversity in bot lane and want to preserve it. The goal is to close the gap, not flip the script. Mages keep their mana pools, waveclear, and earlier power spikes. ADCs get to survive lane and actually scale into the late-game monsters they're designed to be.

What This Means for Your Solo Queue Games

If you're an ADC main: this is your patch. Fleet Footwork + base MR buffs + Heal improvements mean you can actually contest the first few waves without losing half your HP to a single Brand W. The support penalty means fewer 1v2 windows, too. I'd recommend spamming Jinx, Caitlyn, or Kai'Sa — champions that benefit from all three buff vectors.

If you're a support main: roaming isn't dead, but the risk/reward math changed. You need a guaranteed payoff before level 5. Engage supports like Nautilus and Leona that thrive in-lane might actually make a comeback over roam-heavy picks.

If you're a mage bot enjoyer: your champion isn't getting deleted. Brand, Swain, Ziggs, and Seraphine are still viable — you just won't auto-win lane anymore. You'll need to actually hit skillshots instead of coasting on base damage.

Final Verdict

I've been critical of Riot's balance team in the past, but this patch preview hits the right notes. The support roaming penalty is aggressive enough to matter, the ADC buffs are surgical rather than sweeping, and the champion changes make sense in context. The real test comes when the full numbers drop and we see whether Hail of Blades Camille support actually disappears from solo queue.

One thing I'm watching: Azir buffs. Every time Azir gets buffed, he takes over pro play for two months. If the numbers are too generous, we'll be right back to Azir-vs-Corki mid every game at Worlds qualifiers.

Patch 26.16 drops August 12. I'll be in the practice tool testing Fleet Footwork numbers the moment it goes live. See you on the Rift — hopefully in a 2v2 bot lane where my support actually stays in lane past level three. Curious what changed last patch?
