Second Dinner just shipped Patch 4.6.2 on August 9, and it's the most consequential Marvel Snap update since launch week. The patch arrives three weeks after the controversial Nexus Events rollout — and it's the studio's clearest mea culpa yet: full gold refunds, a universal Jane Foster giveaway, and a nine-card balance pass that finally puts Hellcow in the nerf pile.
I've been playing Marvel Snap since the October 2022 global launch and burned through roughly 4,000 gold on the first Nexus Event. I can confirm the refund hit my account about thirty minutes after the patch dropped, and Jane Foster shows up in my collection with full art. Below is exactly what changed, what it means for your deck, and where the meta is heading.
What Changed in Patch 4.6.2
Nexus Event Compensation
The headline change isn't a card — it's money back in your pocket. Per the official Marvel Snap patch notes, Second Dinner is automatically returning every gold coin spent on Nexus Events since the system debuted on July 19. According to community coverage by Out of Cards, the refunds processed overnight with no player action required.
On top of the refunds, Jane Foster: The Mighty Thor — the Series 5 card that drove the entire Nexus Event controversy with its reported 1.5% drop rate — has been granted to every existing player regardless of participation. New accounts created after August 9 will still be able to pull Jane Foster from Pool 3. Wave has also been moved into Pool 3 alongside Jane Foster, great news for new players who used to wait months for that lockdown staple.
Quality-of-Life Updates
A handful of under-the-radar improvements shipped with the patch:
| Category | Change |
|---|---|
| Matchmaking UI | You can now see your opponent's card backs during the matchmaking screen |
| Season Pass XP | No XP from retreating turns 1, 2, or 3 unless your opponent snapped |
| Retreat Rules | You can now retreat when an opponent "Snaps back" in the same turn |
| Art Updates | Card visual effects updated for Colossus, The Collector, Black Widow, Arnim Zola, and Cerebro |
| Audio Updates | Human Torch voice-over, The Collector sound effects, more announcer "Snap" variety |
The Season Pass XP change is the most important one here. It closes the abuse case where players queued turn 1, snapped early, then retreated for fast Season XP. In my opinion, this rule was overdue — but it also means casual players need to actually finish games now.
The Nine Card Rebalances
Patch 4.6.2 rebalances nine cards. Three get nerfed, four get buffed, and two get clarity reworks:
| Card | Before | After | Direction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hellcow | 2 Cost / 6 Power | 4 Cost / 6 Power | Nerf |
| The Collector | 2 Cost / 0 Power, +2 per card drawn | 2 Cost / 1 Power, +1 per card drawn | Nerf |
| Nakia | Give ALL cards in hand +2 Power | Give 2 cards in hand +2 Power | Nerf |
| Kingpin | On Reveal: Next turn, destroy moved cards | When a card moves here on turn 6, destroy it | Rework |
| Colleen Wing | 3 Cost / 5 Power | 2 Cost / 4 Power | Buff |
| Sword Master | 4 Cost / 7 Power | 3 Cost / 6 Power | Buff |
| Lizard | 2 Cost / 4 Power | 2 Cost / 5 Power | Buff |
| Rescue | 5 Cost / 5 Power, +5 if alone | 4 Cost / 4 Power, +5 if alone | Buff |
| Wave | Pool 5 | Pool 3 | Availability |
Hellcow's Long-Awaited Nerf
Hellcow finally takes the hit. Discarding two cards for a 2-Cost 6-Power body was too efficient in discard decks — Second Dinner's developer note acknowledges that "discarding two is now clearly a beneficial effect, so we have moved Hellcow's 'discard multiple' effect up to 4-Cost." It's a serious blow to any deck running Modok, Hela, or Apocalypse as a finisher.
The tradeoff: Sword Master drops to 3/6 (from 4/7) and Colleen Wing drops to 2/4 (from 3/5) — both buffed by one energy tier to maintain the discard curve. If you're building around discard, you'll still have a viable curve; slot Hellcow as a turn-4 follow-up rather than a turn-2 starter.
The Collector and Nakia Get Pulled Back
The Collector loses both Power and the per-card buff, dropping from a 2/0 stat with +2 per draw to 2/1 with +1. The developer note is blunt: "The Collector's ability to gain power rapidly in many decks is a bit too out of control, especially at his Cost." Wong/Hela players were abusing Collector as a snowball engine; this kills that line entirely.
Nakia loses the most text in the patch. She used to buff your entire hand for +2 Power; now she picks just two cards. She'll still see play in Loki and Silver Surfer decks, but the information-density loss is steep.
Kingpin: Clarity Over Power
The Kingpin change is the most interesting — it's not a nerf or a buff, it's a clarity pass. Old Kingpin required dropping him on turn 5 to destroy turn-6 moved cards; new Kingpin simply says "When a card moves here on turn 6, destroy it." In my opinion, this is a strict upgrade for any Aero, Spider-Man, or Doctor Strange deck.
The Buff Pile: Colleen, Sword Master, Lizard, Rescue
The four straight buffs fill the discard-curve holes left by Hellcow's nerf:
- Colleen Wing (2/4) — solid turn-2 discard trigger.
- Sword Master (3/6) — now a real turn-3 discard payoff with decent stats.
- Lizard (2/5) — pure Power buff, useful in zoo and Devil Dinosaur shells.
- Rescue (4/4, +5 if alone) — costs one less for the same situational upside, which is a huge boost to any lockdown deck running Spidey or Professor X.
What This Means for the Meta
Three things are now true after Patch 4.6.2:
- Discard is still playable, just different. The Hela/Apocalypse line takes a meaningful hit but the curve still works.
- Wong Collector is dead. With The Collector neutered and Wong untouched, that archetype finally loses its dominant shell.
- Lockdown is back. Rescue's cost drop, Kingpin's clarity buff, and Wave entering Pool 3 create a defensive metagame that hasn't existed since season 3.
The bigger story is the trust signal. Second Dinner shipped Nexus Events on July 19, watched the community revolt for ten days, killed the system on July 28, and shipped refunds plus a free premium card on August 9. After roughly 18 months of playing this title, I'll be the first to say: this genre desperately needs more of that kind of mea culpa.
What You Should Do Right Now
- Don't spend the refund gold immediately. Second Dinner has hinted at a new monetization system coming later this season.
- Build around Wave before her Pool 3 demand spikes. Pulling her while she's still uncommon is free Series 3 velocity.
- Lock in your Jane Foster variant slot. The free card is base-only, but the variant slot opens up new deck-art options.
- Sell your Hellcow Collection Level boosters. Pivot the resources to Sword Master or Colleen Wing.
- Play Lockdown. Rescue + Kingpin + Wave is genuinely scary now, and I expect it to define the next week's climb to Infinite.
Patch 4.6.2 isn't flashy. But it's the patch that tells you Second Dinner actually listens — and for a game with this much card-pool variance, that matters more than any single nerf.
