Mewgenics — the cat-breeding turn-based tactical roguelike from Edmund McMillen (The Binding of Isaac) and Tyler Glaiel (The End Is Nigh) — is finally leaving the PC. The console version launches digitally on September 8, 2026 across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, with physical copies of the PS5 and Switch 2 editions following in Q1 2027. If you have been waiting for a couch-friendly run, here is everything you need to know before launch.

The console date was confirmed during Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live by Geoff Keighley, followed by a live Ridiculon performance of the song Guillotina. Publisher Nicalis followed with an official press release the same day.

Price and Editions

| Format | Price (USD) | Availability | |---|---|---| | PC (Steam) | $29.99 | Out now (since Feb 10, 2026) | | Console digital (PS5 / Xbox / Switch 2) | $39.99 | September 8, 2026 | | Physical PS5 / Switch 2 | $49.99 | Q1 2027 |

There is no physical Xbox edition announced. Retailer placeholder dates for the boxed versions currently read March 31, 2027, but Nicalis has only committed to the Q1 2027 window, so treat that as a placeholder until your preferred retailer confirms a ship date.

Exact Unlock Time

The PlayStation Store lists the PS5 release for September 8 at 04:00 UTC, which lands at 9:00 p.m. Pacific on September 7 (midnight Eastern). This is the only platform-specific unlock time currently printed on the official storefronts we checked. Xbox and Nintendo eShop listings confirm the September 8 date but do not yet publish a regional countdown. If you have followed other Nicalis launches, you can usually expect a global midnight rollout once a storefront goes live — but for PS5 specifically, the 04:00 UTC stamp is the number to set your alarm to.

Cross-Save and Cross-Progression

There is no official cross-save policy for Mewgenics as of writing. Steam Cloud, Xbox cloud saves, and Nintendo cloud saves are listed separately, and each one normally syncs only inside its own ecosystem. Until Nicalis or McMillen publish a cross-progression statement, assume your PC save will not carry over to console, and your console save will not move between PS5, Xbox, and Switch 2. Buying on one storefront does not grant a copy on another.

What You Are Actually Getting

The console version is the same game that moved over one million copies on Steam in its first week back in February — not Mewgenics 2, not a console-only expansion, not a remaster. On launch day you get the full feature set:

  • 1,000+ unique abilities spread across 12+ classes (75 per class)
  • 900+ equippable items
  • 200+ enemies and bosses across biomes
  • An 82-track original score by Ridiculon
  • Roughly 200 hours of content if you want to see everything

Combat is turn-based grid tactics: position matters, terrain interacts with abilities, and surviving cats return home to breed the next generation, passing down skills, items, and mutations. Mutations can hand you a powerful perk bundled with a real handicap, so every breeding decision is a long-term bet. Classes like Fighter, Tank, Mage, and Thief each have their own tactical niche, and Mages can hit multiple tiles while Tanks absorb punishment that would shred squishier party members.

Should You Pre-Order or Wait?

If you have been on the fence about Mewgenics since February, the console launch is the cleanest reason to jump in: $39.99 is the same as the standard indie digital price, the full PC feature set is included on day one, and the team has had six months of patches to settle any rough edges. If you are platform-agnostic, the PS5 listing is the only one with a confirmed unlock time, so PS5 players are the ones who can plan a midnight run tonight. For everyone else, your console's store page should show a countdown once the game is ready to pre-load.
